Getting Ready for Boating Season

getting ready for boating season

That feeling of finally getting back on the water after a long winter—there's just no substitute for it. The sun on your face, the wind in your hair (or what's left of it), and the freedom of cruising on your boat-it's a sensation like no other.

But we all know the preparation that comes with it. Every year, you've got to get your vessel ready for the boating season. And, as you probably recall, that means more than just turning the key and hitting the throttle.

SC Wake Boating Checklist

A well-planned boating checklist will have you out cruising by Memorial Day while others are scrambling at the last minute, trying to remember where they stored their life jackets six months ago. To help you avoid that fate, consider this short blog post your annual reminder of how to get suitably organized.

It is by no means exhaustive - but it will help prepare you for the basics before boating season begins.

Bow to Stern

The average boat takes a beating each boating season. So, start by checking for cracks or damage all around the boat that might have occurred during winter storage. You'll want to scrub away any buildup or residue, inspect and reapply antifouling paint if needed. Don't forget to inspect your anodes. If they're heavily worn, it's probably time to replace them before the season starts.

Inspect hardware fittings and railings to ensure nothing has come loose or begun to corrode. Clean and check all windows, hatches and seals for leaks, especially if your boat faced harsh winter conditions or was stored outdoors.

Keeping the Boats Heart Pumping

Engine problems can kill an enjoyable day faster than just about anything else. So, your power system needs a complete check before each boating season. Replace old fluids—oil, coolant, power steering fluid, transmission fluid. Don't forget new fuel, oil and air filters to keep everything running smoothly.

A thorough battery check is relatively simple: just clean the terminals and test charging capability. Inspect your propeller for dings, pitting or other damage that could affect performance. Run your engine (with proper water supply if on land) before your first outing each boating season. Listen for unusual sounds, watch for proper water circulation. Give your bilge pump a quick test and make sure the area is clean and free of debris.

Deck Flooring

One often overlooked aspect of boat maintenance is the boat's flooring. Worn, slippery surfaces can be accidents waiting to happen. Upgrading to SeaDek marine flooring before the boating season starts gives you far better traction when the deck gets wet. It cushions the impact on your joints during long days out and protects your boat's surface from scratches.

When you consider how many hours you will probably spend standing on your boat this season, this upgrade practically pays for itself in comfort alone - not to mention safety.

And on that note…

Safety Essentials

Arguably the most important items on a checklist for boaters relate to everyone's safety. Before hitting the water this season, take a moment to review your state's specific boating regulations, as requirements for safety equipment, registration, and operator certification vary across the country. Ensure you have enough US Coast Guard-approved life jackets that are properly sized for everyone who might join you this boating season. Check fire extinguisher pressure gauges and expiration dates according to USCG guidelines, test all navigation lights, and restock any depleted items in your first aid kit.

Remember that safety equipment is only useful if it's accessible. As you prepare for boating season, create a system where these items aren't buried under coolers and gear but can be reached in seconds when needed.

For additional boating safety tips, check resources like these federal requirements for recreational boating from the United States Coast Guard’s website (USCG) or consider a BoatUS membership for their comprehensive support services.

Comfort on the Waves

When planning for comfort on the waves, remember that temperature management is key, especially during those hot summer days and crowded July 4th celebrations on the water. A quality cooler is essential equipment.

Yukon Coolers are built specifically for the marine environment. Their famously heavy-duty construction keeps ice frozen for days. They are perfect for storing cold drinks and fresh catches. Their tough lid gaskets create a remarkable seal that won't leak even with the rocking and movement of boat travel.

Although not a priority for many, seating and lounging areas may benefit from fresh cushions or covers if yours are starting to show signs of wear. And don't forget about the elements: check that bimini top or canvas is in good condition before you need it.

SC Wake can also help you with shade, we offer boat sun shades in several sizes, along with hard to find boat sun shade hardware parts.

Keep It Tidy!

A cluttered boat is not only annoying-it's also a safety hazard. Before the boating season starts, take some time to clean out old items from storage compartments. Create dedicated spaces for the things you use daily. That makes life easier (and safer) on the water.

The Little Things

Those small details can turn a good day on the water into an amazing one. Convenience is key-and that's where the right boating accessories come in. Think drink holders that keep your beverages secure-even in choppy water. Dash pockets to keep your cell phone secure and at an ams reach. Waterproof phone cases (or mounts) to keep your communication tools safe. Non-slip step pads for secure boarding and exiting? Yes, please.

Launch Day

When boat season launch day arrives, do one quick review: check the weather forecast on NOAA's marine weather service, fill the tank (remembering the 1/3 fuel rule), and verify your trailer connections. Always tell someone your float plan before heading out.

With a bit of prep work and some elbow grease, you'll be spending more time enjoying the water-and less time troubleshooting problems. That's what the crew here at SC Wake wishes for you this boating season.

Just one final thing for those of you with other recreational vehicles…
