Easy SeaDek Maintenance Tips for Boat Owners

Easy SeaDek Maintenance Tips for Boat Owners

posted by Erica Fisk on Jul 15th 2026

Having recently treated yourself to what is arguably the best boat flooring on the market, you probably want to make sure it remains in ship-shape condition for as long as possible.

Fortunately, cleaning SeaDek requires relatively little effort. We engineered our popular marine flooring to be simple to maintain, not to mention comfortably sublime.

But that doesn't mean you can install SeaDek and expect it to stay pristine indefinitely without the occasional spot of TLC. After all, grime builds up over the years, and stains happen all the time. It’s just part of life on the water.

Cleaning SeaDek Is Simple

But with a steady SeaDek cleaning routine, you will keep your deck looking fresh, feeling assuringly comfortable under your tootsies, and performing just the way it should for many, many years to come.

Before we get to the step-by-step, please indulge us briefly as we explain why the occasional bit of TLC is important with new marine flooring.

Why Taking Care of SeaDek Is Important

SeaDek's unique and extremely well-engineered closed-cell PE/EVA foam construction gives you the perfect balance of grip and cushioning comfort underfoot.

But the performance of SeaDek is improved by keeping those microscopic surface textures clean. While many people buy SeaDek for aesthetics and comfort, boat flooring of this quality has other uses too, especially in terms of safety.

Over 65% of anglers, for example, cite deck traction as their most important safety feature. To that end, you might see why proper maintenance is more than just about stunning looks.

SeaDek Cleaning for Comfort and Safety

SeaDek certainly isn't prone to attracting dirt and grime, and the foam's closed-cell structure naturally resists water absorption, but dirt, oils, and biological matter can build up in the textured surface over time.

When that happens, you lose both the superior traction that keeps you safer on the water and the shock absorption that reduces fatigue. Basically, regular SeaDek cleaning will preserve the comfort and security that made you choose this wonderful product in the first place.

Get to Know Your SeaDek (Before Trouble Starts)

SeaDek’s closed-cell EVA foam naturally resists water and most grime, but it’s worth knowing what can harm it. The pressure-sensitive adhesive backing uses an acrylic-based 3M formula that bonds incredibly well, but certain chemicals can compromise both the foam and the adhesive.

Harsh solvents like acetone or MEK are the biggest risks as they can break down the foam's cellular structure and weaken the adhesive bond. Bleach may feel logical (and tempting) for tough stains, but it can discolor the material and potentially void your warranty.

“Avoid harsh solvents like acetone on the foam when cleaning SeaDek, as they can weaken the bond and void your warranty. Acetone is only safe when used carefully during removal or installation.”

Either way, the closed-cell construction means that most contaminants stay on the surface, which means they are easy to remove with the right approach. You might compare it to your skin: gentle, consistent care is obviously better than aggressive scrubbing with harsh chemicals.

In that sense, SeaDek cleaning is no different.

Routine SeaDek Cleaning

The following simple routine after each outing will keep your SeaDek looking (and performing) like new:

  1. Rinse with fresh water: Start by washing away salt, sand, and loose debris. Even if you're in a hurry, don't neglect this step.
  2. Apply cleaning solution: Spray SC Wake Boat Juice or mix mild dish soap (1 oz per gallon of water). The concentrated formula means a little goes a long way.
  3. Light scrubbing: Use a medium-bristle deck brush with gentle pressure. If you're using a drill attachment, keep it under 600 RPM to avoid surface damage.
  4. Dwell time: Let the cleaner sit for three to five minutes. This breaks down oils and biological matter without aggressive scrubbing.
  5. Thorough rinse and air dry: Remove all soap residue and allow the boat to dry completely in the air before covering or storing it.

The operative word here is routine. Cleaning SeaDek consistently will prevent the slow, gradual buildup that requires far deeper cleaning later. If anything, it's nice to have another excuse to spend time on the boat, right?

Deep-Cleaning SeaDek & Tough Stains

As you can see, SeaDek cleaning is pretty simple, probably just as you expected. But with that statement comes a caveat: sometimes, assuming you are presented with more stubborn, specific challenges, routine maintenance just isn't enough.

Here's how to clean SeaDek when dealing with nasty, unforgiving stains:

Fish Blood & Bait Slime

Enzyme cleaners work a treat here because they break down proteins naturally. Apply the cleaner, let it work for 10-15 minutes, then use a soft pressure wash setting (keep it under 1,500 PSI, though). The idea is that the enzymes do the grunt work, so you don't need to scrub too aggressively.

Can I use bleach? No, absolutely not. Bleach can discolor SeaDek and may void your warranty. Enzyme cleaners are usually more effective anyway (and safer for the material).

Sunscreen/Oil Buildup

Oils need a degreasing approach. To do so, mix warm water with a quality marine degreaser and work in steady circular motions with a medium-bristle brush. The warm water helps dissolve oils, while the circular motion prevents streaking.

What about dish soap? You can, although marine-specific degreasers are preferable for heavy buildup. That said, we sometimes find that regular dish soap works for light oil contamination.

Mold & Mildew

Sodium percarbonate (that's the active ingredient in OxiClean) works better than chlorine bleach. Just mix according to the package directions, soak the affected area for one hour, and keep the solution wet during this time. Then brush gently, patiently, and rinse thoroughly.

Will this damage the foam? In a word, no. Cleaning SeaDek with sodium will not compromise the EVA foam structure.

Rust & Metal Marks

For spot treatment only, use a 400-grit wet sanding pad with light pressure. Work in small circles and rinse frequently to avoid heat buildup. This is your last resort, so try other methods first.

How much pressure? Just enough to remove the mark without gouging the foam. Let the abrasive do the work, not your elbow grease..

Preventive Maintenance Habits

As with most things in life, prevention is better than cure. Cleaning SeaDek boat flooring is no exception to that age-old rule.

After each trip:

  • Rinse with fresh water (especially after saltwater use)
  • Remove any visible debris or spills immediately
  • Check for new stains or damage

Weekly maintenance:

  • Thorough cleaning with your 5-minute method
  • Inspect high-traffic areas for wear patterns
  • Clean around hardware and fittings where grime accumulates

Seasonal maintenance:

  • Deep clean before long-term storage
  • Check adhesive edges for lifting or peeling
  • Consider professional inspection for high-use boats

A UV-protective boat cover can greatly extend your SeaDek's life, as can a shoes-off policy! Small habits make a big difference over time.

SeaDek Cleaning Do's & Don'ts

Do

Don't

Why

Warranty void and material damage

Off-Season Storage & Winterization

Proper storage extends SeaDek's life well beyond the average five to seven years of regular use. The idea is to prevent moisture buildup and avoid compression damage.

Clean SeaDek thoroughly before storage, as any remaining organic matter can become slightly problematic during those long winter storage periods. Allow complete drying, then ensure good airflow around stored components.

If you are storing SeaDek sheets separately, try laying them flat or rolling them loosely. At the risk of stating the obvious, always avoid placing heavy objects on top, as this can cause permanent compression marks in the foam, given enough time.

Temperature swings aren't a pressing concern, but UV exposure during storage can cause premature aging, so always store in a cool, dry, dark location (if you can).

Repair or Replace SeaDek Marine Flooring?

SeaDek is incredibly durable, but it's not immortal. We designed our product to hold up against heavy traffic and regular outings, but it helps if you can watch for these warning signs:

  • Delamination: Edges lifting or bubbles under the surface usually point to adhesive failure. Small areas can sometimes be re-adhered, but widespread delamination usually means replacement time.
  • Permanent compression: High-traffic areas may develop permanent indentations. If the foam doesn't bounce back after cleaning, the cellular structure has probably been compromised.
  • UV chalking: Severe sun damage appears as a chalky, faded surface that ‘feels different’ somehow, underfoot. This indicates the foam's surface has started the process of breaking down.
  • Loss of texture: If cleaning doesn't restore the original grip, the surface texture has worn beyond recovery, unfortunately. Again, Father Time catches up with the best of us, at some point, and SeaDek is no different.

If you reach these points, it might be time to consider a new SeaDek installation rather than ongoing repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a pressure washer when cleaning SeaDek?

Yes, but keep pressure under 1,500 PSI and use a wide spray pattern.

Will cleaning affect my SeaDek warranty?

Proper cleaning with recommended products won't affect your warranty. Avoid solvents like acetone, which can void coverage.

How often should I deep clean my SeaDek?

Monthly for high-use boats, seasonally for occasional use. Regular light cleaning reduces the need for aggressive deep cleaning.

My SeaDek feels slippery after cleaning—why?

Soap residue is the usual culprit. Rinse more thoroughly and consider using less cleaning product next time.

Can I repair small tears or cuts myself?

Minor damage can sometimes be addressed with marine-grade adhesive, but significant tears usually require professional SeaDek replacement.

Does SeaDek lose its grip over time?

With proper maintenance, SeaDek maintains its traction properties throughout its 5-7 year lifespan.
